How to study for the California electrician exam
Six weeks, weighted the way the exam is — and starting somewhere most study plans do not: navigation before knowledge.
The reasoning is in the first week's focus line, and it is the whole thesis: you cannot look something up quickly in a book whose shape you do not know. On an open-book exam at 2:42 a question, an hour spent learning the chapter map pays back more than an hour spent reading any single article.

Learn the nine chapters and their article ranges
Write them out from memory daily until it is automatic. This is the single highest-leverage hour in the whole plan.

Read Article 90 end to end
Especially the code arrangement rule — it is what makes Chapter 8 stand alone.

Work Article 100 and Article 110
When a question uses a defined term oddly, the answer is in Article 100. 110.14(C) and 110.26 are two of the most-asked rules in the book.

Practise finding articles by number, against a timer
Twenty random article numbers, each inside fifteen seconds. Typing a number beats searching a keyword every time.
Conductors and ampacity
The maths half of the exam rests almost entirely on this week.

Table 310.16, ambient, conductor count, termination cap, small-conductor rule — in that order, thirty times.

60 °C at 100 A and below, 75 °C above, unless marked otherwise. You derate from 90 but you terminate at 75.

Including where circular mils come from, and that the 3% and 5% figures are recommendations rather than requirements.
Wiring methods, boxes and fill
Chapter 3 is a third of the installation questions and it rewards pattern recognition.

Counting rules first: yokes count two, all clamps count one, pigtails count nothing.

Half through Annex C, half the long way through Chapter 9 — so you know when the shortcut is available.

Grounding and bonding
Article 250 is the single biggest fail area. It is long, but it is not disorganised.

One takes the service conductors, the other takes the overcurrent device. Confusing the inputs is the classic wrong answer.
